History Major Samuel Hahn

The UC History Department offers History majors the chance to meet interesting people, do good work, and have rewarding experiences in Cincinnati and the broader area.

How?  Meet Samuel Hahn.  Sam is living proof of the rewarding things that students can do by combining their studies in History with a History internship.

Sam, a fourth year undergraduate originally from Cincinnati, has long been interested in combining his interest in history with his passion for video production.  With the help of our Director of Public History, Professor Fritz Casey-Leininger, Sam learned about internship opportunities in our region and was quickly able to step into a position helping the Historical Society of College Hill organize its bicentennial celebrations, which were held earlier this year.

Working for the Society as an intern over the summer of 2013, Sam helped create a video offering Living History Tours to mark the Bicentennial, with a special focus on highlighting College Hill’s rich history as an abolitionist enclave.  The Society’s Ms. Diana Porter, Sam’s supervisor on the video project, described having Sam as a “win-win situation for everyone concerned.”  “Sam was able to learn about our local history and all the resources we have in the area, as well as practical things, like how to get permission to reproduce images, while we, in return, got a wonderful video that we can continue to use in educating our members and the whole neighborhood.”

What better example of history students combining their studies and their passions! Congratulations to Sam on a job well done.  If you are an undergraduate History major or minor interested in making your mark on our community, make sure to contact Professor Fritz Casey-Leininger, our Director of Public History, to find out more about our internship program.  There are some wonderful positions waiting for you out there, and wonderful opportunities for to learn and help others at the same time.
