The week of September 24, 2018 will be our "RLL Food Week," with various events (please see attached flyer) organized on Tuesday and Thursday of that week to promote the linguistic, national, and cultural diversity of the programs that we offer in our department of Romance Languages and Literatures at the University of Cincinnati. We chose food as our thematic focus because food, cooking, "fooding"—how we use, prepare, and consume food—deeply illustrate historical and cultural traditions, practices, and cultures in the Arab world, Europe, and Latin America. In fact, one of our faculty members, Prof. Maria-Paz Moreno, has become a renowned food scholar; her most recent monograph Madrid: A Culinary History was published by Rowman & Littlefield in 2017 and has garnered glowing reviews. The events planned on Tuesday, September 25 and Thursday, September 27 will take place in a variety of locations on and off campus, and include scholarly presentations, a film screening, a talk by the founder of a local organization, La Soupe, dedicated to providing sustainable meals to the community, and a class at a French restaurant in Cincinnati. This "Food Week" therefore aims to promote the cross-cultural and interdisciplinary dimensions of our department, which offers not only majors and minors in Arabic, French and Spanish, graduate degrees in French, Spanish, and Romance Languages, but also Portuguese and Italian and certificates in Spanish for Business, French for Business, Service Learning in Spanish for Social Workers and Health Care Services, Arabic Language and Culture, Italian Language and Culture and Spanish/English Translation Studies.
The Esquire Theater on Ludlow is screening four films form Latin America with introductions and discussions led by RLL faculty and special guests. There will be (limited) free tickets to the UC Community. Contact Kayla Schaub to reserve a seat (firstname.lastname@example.org)
This RLL Food Week Presentation will include thyme pies and rolled grape leaves snack. Learn more about a coming up course SS19 Arabic course: Hispano-Arabic Culture, Literature, Music and Architecture/Art.
The Department of Romance and Arabic Languages & Literatures presents "Tasting Power: The Bittersweet History of Chocolate". Come enjoy a presentation by Prof. Moreno, with chocolate samples (Promotion of SS19 Spanish course: Food and Culture of Spain).
Come view the screening of "The Gleaners and I" presented by Michael Gott, followed by a panel discussion about the film in the context of culture, cuisine and sustainability with Chef Suzy DeYoung and UC Professors Michael Gott, Maria Paz Moreno, and Thérèse Migraine-George. "The GLeaners and I" (in French "Les glaneurs et la glaneuse") is a 2000 French documentary film by Agnès Varda that features various kinds of gleaning. It was entered into competition at the 2000 Cannes Film Festival and later went on to win awards around the world. In a 2014 "Sight and Sound" poll, film critics voted "The Gleaners and I" the eighth best documentary film of all time.
