Chelsea is a new PhD student in the Hobson Lab who started in January 2021. She earned her undergraduate degree at Mills College in Oakland, CA, where she studied behavioral ecology of California ground squirrels in Dr. Jenn Smith’s lab. Chelsea studied for a M.Sc. In Applied Animal Behaviour and Animal Welfare from the University of Edinburgh in Scotland, U.K. For her capstone project she joined the Auersperg Lab at the Messerli Research Institute of the University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna to study social cognition in Goffin cockatoos.

Chelsea’s plan for research in the Hobson Lab is to study the relationship between sociality and stress in Monk parakeets. She is interested in using the study of animal behavior to assess and improve animal welfare in scientific and evidence-based ways.

I am interested in the behavior and ecology of animals with a primary focus on reptiles. Currently, I am investigating how snakes choose to move through the environment and the diet and feeding behavior of local snake species. My research consists of field studies around Cincinnati in combination with laboratory experiments.

I am currently conducting research in Dr. Joshua Benoit's research laboratory, where we study the effects of dehydration on mosquito blood-feeding, reproductive output, survival, gene expression, and how those factors influence vectorial capacity.

Past projects have included studies on Antarctic mite microbiomes, winter tick thermal tolerance, and contributions to multiple arthropod genome projects.

I am interested in the microbial ecology of high pH serpentinizing systems and the interplay between geochemistry and microbial metabolism. In particular I am currently studying the role of sulfur in the Ney Springs serpentinizing system and how the extreme conditions of this environment may affect the bioavailability of different sulfur species and how they are utilzed by microorganisms as an energy source.
