Joseph A Caruso

Title: Professor
Office: 507A Rieveschl Hall
Tel: 513-556-9306
Web: http://plasmachem.weebly.com/

Professor Caruso received his PhD from Michigan State University under the direction of Alexander Popov. After a one-year postdoctoral fellowship with J. J. Lagowski at The University of Texas - Austin, he joined the faculty of the University of Cincinnati as assistant professor of analytical chemistry. During this time he has authored or co-authored close to 400 scientific publications and presented over 325 invited lectures at universities and at scientific meetings.

Professor Caruso’s research interests are trace elemental analysis by atomic spectrometric methods. The principle focus is plasma source mass spectrometry. His interests in this area are wide ranging from sample introduction to instrumentation and detection. A strong interest of the group continues to be chemical speciation with element specific detection followed by molecular mass spectrometry to achieve "metallomics" analysis. Application of these methods to discovering biomarkers in CSF, molecular level understandings of phytoremediating plants, the role of metal regulation in infectious diseases and to establish a better molecular level understanding of the selenium reduction of arsenic toxicity.

Professor Caruso is a Fellow of the American Chemical Society, Fellow of the Society for Applied Spectroscopy, Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry. He has been honored by Eastern Michigan University with its 1990 Distinguished Alumni Award, by the American Chemical Society with the 1992 Cincinnati Chemist of the Year Award, the Federation of Analytical Chemistry and Spectroscopy Society with the 1994 Anachem Award, and with the 2000 Spectrochemical Analysis Award given by the Analytical Division of the American Chemical Society. In 2007 he was awarded the George Rieveschl Distinguished Scientific Research Award. In 2012 he was named Distinguished Research Professor. Since that time he has received the Theophilus Redwood Lectureship Award from the Royal Society of Chemistry in November 2013 and the Eastern Analytical Symposium Fields of Analytical Chemistry Award to be presented 2014.

ISI Web of Science, as of December 2012 lists ca. >9,800 citations to his articles, reviews, conference proceedings and notes with average citations of 26 for his full list of publications. The h-index is 52 (meaning that > 50 articles have been cited 50 or more times). He is one of the most published and most cited authors in UC Chemistry and the University.
