Degrees & Programs
The Department of Mathematical Sciences offers a wide variety of Undergraduate and Graduate Degree options. Both Mathematics and Statistics degrees are offered.
Mathematics Undergraduate Programs
The Department of Mathematical Sciences offers a major leading to the degrees of Bachelor of Arts (BA) or Bachelor of Science (BS) in Mathematics.
The major in mathematics under the BA degree program will be suitable for students interested in liberal arts, and the BS degree program will be suitable for students interested in more in-depth focus on mathematics.
To add a second major in math, you will need to complete the appropriate form below:
Choosing a math minor to pair with your major is a great way to enhance your course of study and set yourself apart in the job market once you graduate.
Students who are not in an undergraduate program – for example, non-matriculated students and graduate students – can complete a certificate in mathematics. The math certificate has the same credit hour and course requirements as the math minor. To apply, please follow these steps:
- Review the admission requirements
- Contact the Undergraduate Program Director at bishopac@ucmail.uc.edu . Do this early to avoid delay in obtaining your certificate.
The Department of Mathematical Sciences offers the opportunity for students to complete both the BA or BS in Mathematical Sciences and the MS in either Mathematical Sciences or Statistics in a five-year period. Learn about the academic requirements and application instructions.

Statistics Undergraduate Programs
Since 2022, the Department of Mathematical Sciences has offered a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Statistics and Minor in Statistics. Courses and training in statistics provide students with cutting-edge data science knowledge and skills.
The Department of Mathematical Sciences offers a major leading to the Bachelor of Science degree in Statistics. Students can choose to take a major in statistics after completing their first year.

To add a second major, please visit the following University Registrar site.
The minor in statistics will let students with their major fields of study equip statistical and data analytical skills. The statistical and data analysis knowledge and skills assist the students to better prepare for a career in their chosen field or graduate studies where quantitative analysis skills play an important role. Examples of undergraduate majors and graduate studies favoring statistics and data analytics include (but are not limited to) quantitative psychology, quantitative marketing and economics, systematic biology, sports analytics, and so on.

Mathematics Graduate Programs
The MS in Mathematical Sciences program is a three-semester course of study that deepens students’ expertise in advanced mathematics with concentrations in pure, applied, or financial mathematics. Graduates from this program are well-equipped for careers in mathematical science or further doctoral study.
The MA for Teachers of Mathematics program summer-based graduate program designed for licensed secondary math teachers who want to deepen their understanding of mathematical ideas. The program takes place over the course of three summer semesters, which rotate the following primary topics: Analysis, Algebra and Statistics, and Geometry.
Learn more about the MA for Teachers of Mathematics program.
The PhD in Mathematical Sciences develops braod knowledge across mathematical disciplines, and culminates in original mathematical research. Graduates from this program are well-equipped to be professional mathematicians in both academia and industry.
Statistics Graduate Programs
The Master of Science (MS) in Statistics degree program is intended to prepare students for careers as statisticians or for entry into a PhD program in Statistics. A student entering with the minimum requirements should expect to take two years to complete the program. Students entering the program with a stronger background in statistics may be able to complete the program in three semesters.
The PhD in Statistics provides rigorous training in theoretical and applied statistics, followed by original dissertation research. During their course of study, most students in this program have the opportunity to work in paid internships with nearby industries and research institutions. Graduates from this program are well prepared for careers as statisticians in both industry and academia.
The Graduate Certificate in Statistical Science is a two-semester, part-time program that builds advanced skills in applied statistical techniques that prepare graduates to utilize statistical data analysis in professional contexts. Students can enroll in the certificate program on its own or alongside a graduate degree at UC.
