MAP Track: Community Psychology

Why are you interested in that specific track?

I have thoroughly enjoyed my time working in the non-profit space, and I would like to use this degree to continue that work.

Why the MAP program?

I attended UC for my undergrad, so the 4+1 track was very appealing to me. Once I took my first MAP class in my fourth year, I knew that I would really like the program. I enjoyed how small and close the cohort seemed. I also liked that it is an applied program so I can gain experiences to take with me in addition to the education.

Where do you hope to be when you graduate?

I hope to graduate in the spring of 2025, and I am not really sure where life will take me from there!

Do you have any advice for students thinking about applying to the MAP program?

Be prepared to READ! Also get comfortable with your cohort-mates because you will be doing a lot of work together. You are all going through the same program together so try to lean on each other/be there for each other when needed.

MAP Track: Organizational Psychology

Why are you interested in that specific track?

I chose the organizational psychology track because I developed a strong interest in industrial-organizational psychology during undergrad. I am intrigued by the idea of applying psychological foundations and practices to increase efficiency, effectiveness, and well-being of workplaces and organizations, as well as the people working within them.

Why the MAP program?

I moved to Cincinnati for my undergraduate degree and completely fell in love with the city. As I entered my senior year at Xavier, I knew I wanted to get my graduate degree, and I knew I wanted to do that in Cincinnati. The MAP program was appealing to me because it is a one year program that allows me to focus specifically on organizational psychology and gain hands on experience in fields such as program evaluation, organizational development, and IO psychology.

Where do you hope to be when you graduate?

Although I am not yet 100% sure of what I want to do after I graduate, I am interested in applied research, organizational development, and working with non-profits!

Do you have any advice for students thinking about applying to the MAP program?

If you are considering the MAP program at UC, definitely apply! The faculty here have such a wide range of experiences and expertise, and cohorts are intentionally kept small to encourage connections among students and staff.

Allison Milejczak

Name: Allison Milejczak

LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/allison-milejczak-01243a232

Hometown: Carmel, Indiana.

Undergraduate Degrees: University of Cincinnati, Major: Psychology with a minor in integrative medicine

Work Experience: Registered Behavioral Health Technician

MAP track: Organizational Psychology

Why are you interested in that specific track? When I graduated with my bachelor’s degree in psychology, I realized I needed additional skills and knowledge to achieve my career goals. I wasn’t sure which path would be the right fit, but my professors at UC often spoke highly of Industrial-Organizational (I-O) psychology, which sparked my interest in learning more about this field. Later, in my current job, I discussed different psychology-related careers with my Board Certified Behavior Analysis (BCBA), and we explored roles in the workplace that focus on enhancing organizational effectiveness and employee well-being. That’s when I discovered my passion for I-O psychology and decided to pursue it as my career path.

Why the MAP program? During my undergraduate years, I knew I wanted to stay close to UC because I loved the campus community and the opportunities it offered. In my senior year, I discovered the 4+1 program, which provided an excellent pathway to advance my education in a streamlined, accelerated format, and it also gave me a clearer sense of what the MAP program would be like. The in-person structure and convenient location in Cincinnati were also major factors, allowing me to benefit from hands-on learning and continued connection with UC’s supportive environment. The MAP program’s pace and structure align perfectly with my goals, making it the ideal choice for my graduate studies.

Where do you hope to be when you graduate? While I’m still exploring specific career paths, I’m particularly interested in government-based roles, possibly working with the military or the FBI. I’ve had the opportunity to connect with professionals in various government positions, and UC’s MAP program has been instrumental in facilitating these connections. Through this program, I’ve met alumni with diverse career trajectories in organizational psychology, which has shown me how widely applicable this field is. This has given me confidence that I’ll find the right fit, knowing organizational psychology skills are valued in so many sectors.

Do you have any advice for students thinking about applying to the MAP program?

My biggest advice for students considering the MAP program is to apply for the 4+1 option in your senior year if eligible, as it’s a great way to get a head start. I also recommend actively seeking internships or hands-on experiences while in the program. Building up practical experience alongside your studies is key; you’ll want a solid balance of education and real-world experience. Having that practical foundation will make your degree even more valuable and help you stand out in the job market.

Hometown: Suman, Indiana.

Undergraduate Degrees: Franklin College, Major: Psychology and Creative Writing, Minor: Professional Writing.

Work Experience: I led a team of great baristas at Starbucks for two years between graduating undergrad and starting the MAP program, which taught me a lot about leadership, employee advocacy, and persistence. Now, I dedicate my time to school and my graduate assistantship where I am lucky enough to work closely with our MAP program director creating content for our webpage, advising 4+1 students, and completing other administrative tasks.

MAP track: Community Psychology

Why are you interested in that specific track? I chose community because I am very interested in the psychological and social benefits of strong community engagement. Although I hope to go into social psychology research, community psychology is something I wanted to know about beforehand because of how directly the work impacts individuals and organizations. I believe this track will set up my future research to be completed with a vision of how others will take it and use it for good.

Why the MAP program? I chose this program because I love Cincinnati, and I was really passionate about the opportunity to work with organizations that are helping communities near me.

Where do you hope to be when you graduate? When I graduate, I want to be entering a PhD program for experimental or social psychology. However, I am constantly learning new things about myself and developing new skills, so I will be searching for a variety of opportunities and not letting myself get too narrow of a vision for my future.

Do you have any advice for students thinking about applying to the MAP program?

The program is very curated for students interested in careers in organizational or community psychology, so do your research and make sure that this program is what you are looking for! All graduate programs are specific because the goal is for you to "master" something, so make sure you know why you want the degree, or at least how it can serve your future.

Undergraduate Degrees: University of Cincinnati, Organizational Leadership and Psychology - BA/AA

Work Experience: I have been in various leadership positions in the food service, retail, wholesale industries. I currently work as a leasing consultant and have had the opportunity to improve and gain many skills. In the near future I will be transitioning to a full time Substitute Teacher and back into Insurance billing and credentialing which I am very much looking forward to.

MAP track: Organizational Psychology

Why are you interested in that specific track? Throughout high school, I thought a lot about what career field I wanted to go into. I knew I had a passion for leadership, and a passion for psychology. I felt so encouraged by the idea of being involved in the development process of organizations. In undergrad I studied Organizational Leadership and psychology. After graduation, I was informed that the MAP program offered the Organizational Psychology track, I knew it was the right path for me.

Why the MAP program? Before I graduated high school, I was told that if I wanted to go to college my only choice financially, was UC, that's because my mom works for the University. I felt pushed into a corner when it came to having a say in my education. I pursued two years at UCBA studying psychology, then transferred to main campus and completed my BA. After experiencing the UC up to that point, I realized it didn't matter how I got there but that it was where I belonged. I was exposed to the MAP Program in an undergraduate research lab and was told that it was very reputable. I spend days doing my due diligence to back up what I've heard and after looking through all the resources it was clear to me, that the MAP program was for me.

Where do you hope to be when you graduate? After I graduate, I hope to be on my way to passionate work and impactful change.

Do you have any advice for students thinking about applying to the MAP program?

Listen to what others have to say about the program, but also account in what you have to say, do your research and take the time to fully make an informed decision. If you decide to apply to the MAP Program, you will have a wonderful experience.

Undergraduate degree(s):

University of North Carolina at Greensboro 2021, major: psychology, minors: creative writing and Spanish, graduated with full university honors

Work experience:

I have experience working as a caregiver to an autistic adult. I also have experience working as a cognitive brain trainer for LearningRx. I have volunteer experience working in several non-profit food pantries including CAIN Food Pantry in Cincinnati, OH.

Interest area: Community Psychology

Why are you interested in that specific track?

My interests change all the time but something that always remains the same is the passion I have to serve communities and make change at the local level. I love hearing unique stories from people with different backgrounds and identities and community psychology really fosters that diversity.

Why the MAP program?

I was really excited about the hands-on kind of work that I would be doing in the MAP program. The capstone piece was very appealing because I knew I would gain field experience. I am also pleasantly surprised with how much of the course work is hands-on, field experience.

Where do you hope to be when you graduate?

I want to work in non-profit management. Currently, my interest is in serving the food-insecure, so I hope to find myself in a director position at a non-profit where I can meet these people where they are.

Katherine Baltrusch

Name: Katherine Baltrusch

LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/katherine-baltrusch-01409a24b/

Hometown: West Chester, OH

Undergraduate degree(s):

University of Cincinnati, April 2022, Major-Neuroscience, Minor-English, Certificate-Forensic Populations

Work experience:

I began working as the Pet Support Aide for Found House Interfaith Housing Network's Pet Support Program in August of 2021. Our program works to provide emergency shelter for the pets of those who are experiencing homeless or some other form of crisis such as hospitalization, rehabilitation, or incarceration, as well as to provide resources such as pet food and veterinary care to low-income pet owners in the community.

Interest area: Community Psychology

Why are you interested in that specific track?

Throughout my life, I have been exposed to and witnessed the struggle of many individuals with mental health problems. With the changing times, our community seems to be more open and willing to talk about these issues, which have been dealt with for too long on a personal/individual level. People are freer in their discussions of issues such as addiction, mental health, and trauma, and with this openness comes an awareness of how these issues are not simply the result of individual differences but may be influenced by social, cultural, economic, or political influences. Therefore, to promote change in the individual, something must be done at the community level. My interest in Community Psychology stems from my desire to affect change regarding psychological issues at the systemic level rather than at the individual level.

Why the MAP program?

As a one-year program, the MAP Program is an amazing option for those who are eager to begin their professional work in the field of psychology. The curriculum has a nice balance of more traditional, academic based work as well as options for applied learning, which really sets its students up for success in their desired field post-graduation. Additionally, the relatively small size of the cohorts is amazing in that it really allows for the development of a sense of community amongst its students, which is something that is difficult to establish within a larger program.

Where do you hope to be when you graduate?

After graduating, I hope to engage in the research and development of better treatment programs for incarcerated women. Many of the treatment programs in prisons today were developed based on studies of incarcerated men. Although research has shown that the risk factors for offending are different for men and women, there has not much movement towards the development and implementation of treatment programs designed to address the factors that are unique for women. So, I hope to engage in this work to help combat this issue and help ensure that the needs of this vulnerable demographic of women are being met.

They have great resources in terms of research, connections, and community partners to assist us in our time here and beyond. Why the MAP: The MAP Program is perfect for me because for three reasons:

a) It's in Cincinnati, where my friends and family are. And, I have no intention of leaving them.

b) I can afford the time and money. I'm projecting to spend about four semesters in the MAP program, and I've mapped out the cost. Working full-time, I should be able to pay for this with very few loans. Which I love!

c) I know a bunch of the faculty members, and I think they're pretty great.

So, altogether, I think I'm going to enjoy my time here!

Undergraduate degree(s): University of Cincinnati, Bachelor of Science in Psychology, 2014-2017. I graduated December 2017.

Work experience: I do not have much work experience pertaining to my degree other than assisting in research labs. I was a research assistant for three different semesters. I worked under Dr. Shockley with the study of perception and action one semester, whereas the other two semesters were spent working under Dr. Chui in the brain lab with graduate students Claire Wilkison and Lynley Turkelson. I also took a class which involved working directly with NAMI and doing procedure evaluations for the organization.

Interest area: I'm still somewhat undecided about my area of interest but I'm almost certain that I want to take the community route.

Why the MAP Program? Where do you hope to be when you graduate?

I chose the MAP Program because I knew I wanted more than my BS but I wasn't sure if I wanted to go all the way for my PhD or not. I'm still undecided with what I want to do career wise, however, I do love the whole research methods aspect; designing and conducting experiments, data collection and analysis. When I graduate from the MAP Program, I hope to have gained some real work experience through interning as well as possibly having a job lined up pertaining to my field, preferably something to do with lab work.

Why the MAP Program? Where do you hope to be when you graduate? I chose the MAP program because I was interested in the research done by the faculty and I like the options to personalize the curriculum in this program. I think its great that students can take classes outside of the department to become well-rounded. I plan on applying to PhD programs after graduation, with the ultimate goal of becoming a professor.

Undergraduate degree from Indiana University (2012-2016)

BA in Psychology, Minor(s): English, Anthropology

Interest area: Organizational

My particular interests include program evaluation, data analysis, and diversity in the workplace and UC’s courses align with what I want to focus on in my studies. As an undergraduate student, I conducted a Needs Assessment which accelerated my interest in Organizational Psychology as well as allowed me to work with organizations and qualitative/quantitative data. Besides this rewarding experience, I centered my senior capstone project on diversity in the workplace, particularly the perceptions of women who wear the Islamic headscarf, the hijab. This research project allowed me to investigate workplace attitudes related to diversity and the marginalization of outgroups. Some achievements of mine include graduating with a program GPA of 4.0, receiving awards from IUSB’s Department of Psychology faculty such as the 2016 Excellence in Psychology Award and the Haines Award for psychological research, and serving as Psi Chi Honor Society President during my senior year. Overall, Cincinnati is a city with great opportunity so I hope that I can gain experience and satisfaction through my wonderful time here in the MAP Program.

My fifteen years as a graphic designer and six years as Assistant Professor in the Division of Experience-Based Learning and Career Education (ELCE) at the University of Cincinnati have afforded me great opportunities to work closely with individuals and organizations to tell stories and craft success plans that are rooted in both strategy and emotion. Currently, my primary responsibility is in the teaching and advising of Graphic Communication Design co-op students, where my passion area is meaningful one-on-one guided reflection of co-op experiences. Additionally I serve as the Creative Director for Experience Magazine, an experiential learning trade publication, and as Co-Chair for ELCE’s Equity & Inclusion committee. I am thrilled to be a part of the MAP program and plan to research and innovate in the areas of equity and inclusion and workplace culture with a focus on emerging professionals in the design industry.

-Why the map program? Where do you hope to be when you graduate?

The course curriculum is uniquely aligned with my interests, gives an opportunity to network with real companies in the field.  The capstone project provides an opportunity to attain real time experience in a relevant firm which will give a lot of insight on the working of a company and how psychology is applied on an everyday basis.

On graduation I would like to work as an OD consultant in a consulting firm. Being a professional dancer, I would like to work even in a performing arts or media company as an organizational psychologist.

Why the MAP Program: I chose the MAP program because of the opportunities it will give me to receive a well-rounded education. I appreciate that while the program has required courses in Psychology, I can continue to take courses from other departments that are of interest to me. I also have a personal interest in social/community psychology, so I like how the MAP program offers a focus in that subject. After graduation, I would like to pursue a PhD or PsyD in Clinical Psychology, with the hopes of one day specializing in PTSD treatment. I would like to focus on working with military veterans/first responders and their families. If given the opportunity, I’d also like to conduct research on PTSD.

I graduated from Wittenberg University in 2016, where I kicked on the football team, with a Bachelor's degree in Psychology and a minor in neuroscience. I took a year off of school to start my own non-profit with my family, Smith Brain Connections, which connects health care professionals to educational opportunities about the brain and trauma to better support Traumatic Brain Injury patients and their families. More information about my non-profit and why we formed can be found at www.smithbrainconnections.com. I chose UC because I liked the small class sizes and the fact that the program can be completed in just a year (although being very rigorous). I developed an interest in the Industrial/Organizational Psychology field over the course of the last few years and when I found out I could take classes to help my non-profit grow as well as working toward a job in the field, the program just made a lot of sense.

While studying psychology, and assisting in research, I became intrigued, and realized that I should further my studies.  Psychology classes provided the foundation and understanding needed to move forward, while research with African American substance abusing women and the prevention of HIV provided hands on experience.  This research also allowed me to see true effects of what is needed in the community.  The education, and training that I’ve gained, made me realize that I can help the community, and those in need.  This is why my interest is in community psychology.  The MAP program is an amazing program that will provide me the additional education that I need to become a help to others.  I hope to work with various community programs and organizations to advance those in need.  My greatest desire is to found my own community program that can assist young children, and families in various ways.  This can be from providing homework assistance to training people in life skills.  If possible, I’d like to make some improvement in every person that I meet.

Also the program at Cincinnati is flexible and broad allowing me to possibly dive into concentrations I wouldn't otherwise be able to learn about. Upon graduation I hope to attend a doctoral program to earn my PhD in clinical psychology.

Every group and individual has the truth of their own story complete with all of its complexities. The journey of acknowledging and understanding the complexities of each story can often cause fear, guilt, and pain, making it more intimidating than engaging. I believe my charge, as an equity leader, is to find stimulating ways to introduce the truths of others while promoting the courage necessary to expand one’s point of view. In college and throughout my professional career I have learned the importance that cultural competency and diversity have on fostering equitable and inclusive communities and organizational environments. The knowledgeable faculty and interdisciplinary curriculum of the MAP program affords a distinctively impactful experience that helps to expand my personal and professional capacity by providing the skills needed in integrating theory into practice. The Master’s degree in Psychology will help me to heed the charge by laying the foundation for my transition into a career focused in Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Justice; and not only expand the truth of my own story, but improve it.

I received my undergraduate degree in Psychology from Xavier University. When I began the degree, I anticipated I would be a clinical psychologist, but that changed the more I heard about Industrial Psychology. The idea of applying psychology to the workplace greatly interested me, and I began to shift my focus to one that looked more at Human Resources. Upon my graduation from Xavier, I began working with UC’s College of Medicine HR office, where I learned quite a bit about the field of Human Resources and the University as a whole. I have recently transitioned to the College-Conservatory of Music, a perfect fit for a former theater techie, where I am continuing to learn something new every day. I am excited to earn this Master’s of Applied Psychology so I can continue to expand my knowledge and apply it to this great university.
