About the Department
The Department of Statistics and Data Science at the University of Cincinnati is dedicated to advancing statistical science and data science through excellence in research, teaching, and student mentoring. Our faculty bring expertise across a broad range of statistical and data science methodologies and applications, reflecting current and emerging trends in the field.
Our faculty are actively engaged in research spanning diverse areas of statistics and data science, with particular interests in developing novel statistical methodologies and applying them to important scientific and real-world problems. The department also has a strong tradition of interdisciplinary research and collaboration with researchers across the University of Cincinnati, the Cincinnati region, and beyond. We are committed to further expanding these collaborations and providing students with opportunities to apply their statistical and data science skills in professional and research settings.
The Department of Statistics and Data Science offers a comprehensive range of undergraduate and graduate programs. Our academic programs include a Bachelor of Science (BS) in Statistics, a minor in Statistics, a Master of Science (MS) in Statistics, a Graduate Certificate in Statistical Science, and a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Statistics. Through these programs, students receive rigorous training in statistical theory, methodology, computation, and data analysis while developing the skills needed to address complex problems in academia, industry, government, and other fields.
The department has a long history of excellence in statistics education and research, with a large and growing network of alumni pursuing successful careers in industry, academia, government, and other organizations. The Cincinnati region provides an exceptional environment for education and research in statistics and data science, with numerous organizations and institutions that have strong interests in statistical applications, data analytics, and quantitative research.
A distinctive strength of our programs is our close connection with local industry and research institutions. The department has a successful internship program that provides graduate and undergraduate students with opportunities to gain practical experience in professional environments. Students have worked with organizations including Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center and Procter & Gamble, applying statistical methods and data science techniques to real-world data analysis and research projects. These experiences provide valuable preparation for careers in statistics and data science while strengthening connections between the department and the broader Cincinnati community.
