Why study Philosophy?
The Philosophy Department curriculum covers most areas in contemporary philosophical problems as well as most of the major periods in the history of philosophy. The department is especially strong in philosophy of mind and philosophy of the life sciences. Please consult the department webpage for information on the strengths of individual faculty. The Ph.D. program in Philosophy offers two tracks, the Traditional Track and the Sciences Track. Students in the Sciences Track do graduate work in a science and write an interdisciplinary dissertation.
The graduate program is a relatively small one which allows close working relationships between faculty and graduate students. In recent years, the ratio of faculty to funded graduate students has been nearly one to one. Distinguished visiting speakers are brought to the department on a regular basis. The department hosts an annual colloquium, which brings in up to a dozen scholars focused on a specific theme.
Admission Requirements

• Three letters of recommendation preferably from philosophy professors
• Official transcripts for BA and MA
Over 88% of University of Cincinnati Ph.D.s from the last decade are employed in academic positions; and 100% who graduated from 2008 to 2015 are now in permanent positions—tenure track or equivalent. In the 2022 Academic Philosophy Data & Analysis (APDA) report, our program ranks third worldwide in its rate of placing PhD graduates in permanent academic positions. In the 2017 Academic Placement Data and Analysis Report, we were ranked #4 in placement rate among all U.S. Philosophy PhD programs.
