Summer Courses
These experiential summer semester courses are open to the Cincinnati community on a non-credit basis.
Wildflowers and Trees of Ohio (BIOL 1009C - $300 non-credit)
Classes take place during the four weeks of Maymester: May 13 – June 2, 2019, T,TH 10 AM to 1:30 PM and SAT 9 AM to 4 PM
For the non-biology major, this course provides an introduction to the diversity of the families of flowering plants, with an emphasis on plants growing wild in the Ohio/Indiana area. Students will learn the plant anatomy and terminology involved in the acquisition of plant identification skills and will learn about the ecology of plants encountered on field trips. On Tuesday and Thursday the class will meet in 411 Rieveschl on the UC main campus; on Saturday the class will meet at the UC Center for Field Studies in Miami Whitewater Forest or at a different location. Other locations such as Shawnee Lookout, Fernald Preserve, and the Oxbow Area will also be visited. Dr. Denis Conover is the instructor.
Field Research in Midwest Archaeology (ANTH 4039 - $400 non-credit)
June 3 – July 7, 2019, Monday, Wednesday,and Friday, 8 am to 2 pm.
Our summer Archaeological Field School (Field Research in Midwest Archaeology) provides a hands-on, learn-by-doing, in-the-field opportunity to learn how to be an archaeologist. Students of all ages are welcome! Join our summer field crew and excavate an ancient Native American village site in the greater Cincinnati area. Students will work along side a professional archaeologist and learn how to properly excavate and record archaeological data, including mapping, measuring, soil description, and sampling. Classes will take place during Session “A”, June 3 – July 7, 2019, Monday, Wednesday,and Friday, 8 am to 2 pm. On rainy days, students will learn archaeological laboratory techniques including artifact cleaning, identification, and the identification of ancient plant and animal remains.These activities will be supplemented with occasional lectures on various archaeological topics and take place at the University of Cincinnati Center for Field Studies. Dr. Kenneth Tankersley is the instructor.
Ornithology (BIOL 3012C - $400 non-credit)
June 3 – July 7, 2019. T,Th 8:00 AM-3:30 PM
Students will learn the systematics, anatomy, physiology, behavior, and evolution and ecology of birds,including many field-based techniques. Standardized avian field methods will be used to study local bird populations at the UC Center for Field Studies and Miami Whitewater Forest. Classes will take place during Session “A”, June 3 – July 7, 2019. T,Th 8:00 AM-3:30 PM. During the course, students will experience lectures focused on the unique features of birds, avian systems, and ecology and evolution. Students will learn to identify bird skin specimens to order level, and how to identify local birds by sight and sound. Prof. Ron Canterbury is the instructor.
