What is Teachers of Spanish & French?
The Graduate Certificate for Teachers of Spanish and French is intended for secondary school teachers of Spanish or French who are seeking the necessary credentials to be able to teach dual credit (college and high school) courses in their high schools. This certificate will provide teachers with the required 18 graduate credit hours of coursework in the discipline of Spanish or French.
This graduate certificate program requires completion of four courses in Applied Linguistics, literature and film, which are taught in the evening during the academic year, and one course in Spanish and French culture, taught during the summer session; students should be able to complete the requirements for the certificate within 12 months.
Students successfully completing this program may apply to and continue in a master's degree programs in either French or Spanish.
The Graduate Certificate is an 18-credit program of coherent coursework in Spanish or French.
There is one required 2-credit course in Spanish and French culture, RLL 7055, which is offered in the summer term.
Each student must complete one 4-credit course in Applied Linguistics, chosen from among RLL 7051, 7052, 7053.
Each student must complete an additional 12 credits (typically three 4-credit courses) chosen from graduate offerings in literature and film, in the language in which they are seeking certifcation, either Spanish (SPAN) or French (FREN).
Applicants will be expected to hold a bachelor's degree in an appropriate program. Applicants must submit the following:
- Unofficial transcript of all college-level work taken for credit at any college or university
- Three letters of recommendation by colleagues or former professors
- A statement of purpose in English, detailing the applicant's goals and motivations for entering the program
- Applicant's CV
- Writing sample written in the target language about the teaching of Spanish or French language or literature.
Applicants who are accepted to the program will need to submit official transcript of all college-level work taken for credit at any college or university.
AccreditationThe University of Cincinnati and all regional campuses are accredited by the Higher Learning Commission.
