Welcome to the Department of History, a community of teachers and students dedicated to socially relevant research and learning. Our students study abroad and close to home, where they have the opportunity to participate in community-engaged research through the Center for the City and with community partners, such as the Harriet Beecher Stowe House and the Cincinnati Museum Center. Through internships, co-ops, and independent and faculty-led research, our graduate and undergraduate students are making a difference as they learn. 

Our work is literally changing the landscape in the city and reinterpreting spaces – as you can see along the Wyandot Removal Trail. Our faculty has strengths in race and caste, empire and international relations, law, religion, cities, environment, medicine, public history, and more. Our students have the opportunity to work for and publish in Ohio Valley History, the premiere journal of this region.

While it is always a good time to study history, the need is all the more evident in a time of rapid change. Join us.

UC celebrates Earth Day 2025 with award-winning publication

April 21, 2025

Earth Day celebrates its 25th anniversary this year. Since its inception, Earth Day has gone global, and with its adoption have come federal intuitions such as the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) and policies familiar to most: the Clean Air, Clean Water and Endangered Species acts. This year, UC’s College of Arts and Sciences has reason to celebrate as well. It’s a regional win, capturing the reformation of Fernald, a former nuclear production facility located in northwest Cincinnati. Professor and environmental historian Casey Huegel has received numerous awards for his book, “Cleaning Up the Bomb Factory: Grassroots Activism and Nuclear Waste in the Midwest,” (Weyerhaeuser Environmental Books, 2024).

UC faculty honored at MLK 'Keep the Dream Alive' awards  

January 30, 2025

Two University of Cincinnati faculty members have been included in this year’s MLK “Keep the Dream Alive” awards, hosted by Crescent Parishes. Honorees include those who lead and contribute to their community by promoting social justice and are advocates that seek to bring change.
