Why study Teachers of History?
The Graduate Certificate for Teachers of History is intended for licensed teachers of secondary school history who are seeking the necessary credentials to be able to teach dual credit (college and high school) courses in their high schools. This certificate will provide teachers with the required 18 graduate credit hours of coursework in the discipline of history.
This graduate certificate can be begun in any term (fall, spring, or summer) and can generally be completed within 12-15 months. The program requires completion of a course in historical methodology and two historiographical seminars, leading to a concentration in US, European, or World History. The program requirements are finished by taking 6 credits from a selection of topical seminars and directed readings.
Students successfuly completing this certificate program may be able to use these credits toward the completion of appropriate Masters in History and Masters in Education degrees.
- Transcript providing evidence of required preparation (may be unofficial for application; official transcript required prior to entrance into program)
- Three letters of recommendation
- Writing sample or appropriate curricular materials
- Statement of purpose addressing motivation and goals for entering program and prior teaching experience

Students enjoy the benefits of our mid-sized graduate program: a varied curriculum combined with personal attention from faculty. A vibrant community of scholars - both students and faculty - creates a lively learning environment. Students select a concentration in United States, European, or World, and everyone receives broad training, taking courses in methodology and historiography, as well as more specialized seminars offered in areas of faculty expertise. Students also take at least one comparative seminar in which a theme is explored across national boundaries, such as gender, race, or urban history.
Graduate seminars meet once a week, always after 2:00 p.m., and core required seminars after 4:00 p.m. Directed Reading courses can be arranged during the Summer term.
The Graduate Certificate is an 18-credit program of coherent coursework in history.
Students are required to take the 4-credit course in Historical Methodology, HIST 7060.
Each student also must complete two 4-credit historiographical seminars. Students concentrating in US History will take HIST 7021-7022; those concentrating in European History will take HIST 7031-7032; those concentratin in World History may choose from these seminars or any of the topical comparative seminars offered under HIST 7070.
Each student also must complete an additional six credits, generally chosen from the 3-credit topical seminars offered at the 6000-level, but students may also choose to complete some or all of these credits through directed readings or other topical graduate seminars.
