During her career (which started from and drew to a close at UC), Professor Jan Bending initially combined doctoral-level research and clinical counseling expertise in serving numerous organizations outside of academia. Her early career was spent as a rehabilitation consultant, then as the manager of employee assistance and rehabilitation programs for Cincinnati Bell, and as a vocational expert for the Social Security Administration. She has served in numerous capacities for the National Rehabilitation Society.
More recently, Professor Bending returned to the department to provide years of valuable teaching, bringing her knowledge of both organizations and of personnel problems to bear in her teaching for the department. She has taught a range of courses as diverse as "Introduction to Sociology" and "Work & Society." More than almost any other professor Jan connects with her students, conveying her enthusiasm for and the value of sociology, as well as higher education in general. She eventually took on the duties of Director of Undergraduate Studies, and also coordinated the Family Studies Program. Her professional and pedagogical contributions made the department stronger. Her sense of humor and her conviviality have helped make the department a great place to work.
