Division of Statistics and Data Science
Welcome to the website for the Division of Statistics and Data Sciences in the Department of Mathematical Sciences.
Statistics is the science of collecting and analyzing data, and generating useful information in the form of inference, prediction, and making decision under uncertainty. Thanks to the explosive growth in data availability, Statistics now plays a crucial role in almost all areas of research. Statistics provides companies and governments with various quantitative tools to extract useful information from complex data and helps them make well-informed and sound decisions.
The Division of Statistics and Data Science aims to provide a solid and well-rounded education on modern statistics. The faculty in the Division are engaged in cutting-edge research in statistical methods and interdisciplinary research; and are actively involved transferring their expertise to students through teaching and advising. The Division offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in statistics, and is in the process of creating a stand-alone undergraduate Major and Minor in Statistics, and a PhD degree in Statistics. Currently undergraduate students can pursue an undergraduate degree in statistics as part of the Statistics-Actuarial Science Major.
We have a long tradition of offering an MS in Statistics and a PhD degree with concentration in Statistics. Our graduate alumni. both MS and PhD numbering in hundreds, are spread across the US with successful employment in industries and academia. The city of Cincinnati is rich with numerous opportunities for statisticians, and our students greatly benefit from this environment by taking internships and full-time employment.
