Professional Summary

Rich Shivener's research interests include multimodal composing, visual rhetoric and common reading programs designed for first-year students.  Those interests stem from his recent professional experiences. Prior to starting the Rhetoric & Composition track, Shivener was assistant director of First-Year Programs at Northern Kentucky University, where he coordinated a common reading program and taught first-year composition. Shivener's graduate-level studies in graphic narratives and new media led him to that position and freelance writing opportunities. In recent years, Shivener has contributed to a variety of publications, including Publishers Weekly, Writer's Digest and the peer-reviewed collections Critical Insights: The Graphic Novel, and Comics Through Time. Shivener has presented research at The Annual Conference on First-Year Experience and Comic-Con International: San Diego.
