1. I am an International student, do I need to take the English Placement Test?

English composition courses are required for all undergraduate students as part of the university's general studies curriculim. International students are strongly encouraged to complete the English as a Second Language (ESL) composition courses as opposed to the standard compostion courses (ENGL). If you are an International Student who has an ACT/SAT score, see the "Policies and Score" page to deterine whether the English Placement is required. If you have a TOEFL, IELTS, or an ESL department English Placement Test score on record, contact the ESL department at (513) 556-3590 or via email at esl1@uc.edu for the proper course or further advising.

2. How many English Placement Tests can I complete?

Only one English Placement Test can be submitted within a two (2) year period. If you completed an English Placement Test and desire to appeal your score, following the Appealing English Placement Decision procedure. Any English Placement Test completed beyond the first submission within a two year period will not be scored.

3. What if I don't print the Reading and Writing Assignment as soon as it becomes available?

The Reading and Writing Assignment will remain on the site throughout the exam period. You can access and print it as often as you like.

4. How do I submit my complete English Placement Test?

Completed English Placement Tests are submitted by uploading the Microsoft Word document on Blackboard. The upload procedure is detailed in the test instructions.

5. My essay is completed, but it is a little past the deadline and the system won't allow me to submit it. What can I do?

6. When will I receive my score and how will I be notified?

An English Placement Test can take up to two weeks to be scored, but most tests are scored with two to three days. Your score will appear on the "My Grades" tab in Blackboard, will be entered on your test record in the student information system, and an email notification of your score and placement will be sent to your student UC email account.

7. My computer just died/my Internet connection is down/my keyboard is malfunctioning. I can't do the essay. Now what can I do?

8. I accessed the reading assignment, but I didn't finish the essay and submit it. What should I do?

English Placement Test scores are only valid for 24 monts. You will have to complete a new English Placement Test; writing assignments used are different during each session.

9. What if I completed an English Placement Test at another college?

If you completed English placement at any University of Cincinnati college within the last 24 months, your English placement will be in the system. English placement tests from other institutions are not accepted at UC.

10. Can I appeal my English Placement Score?

If you strongly believe your placement essay did not reflect your ability, you may appeal. Appeal information is available at here.
