undergraduate program
Certificate Requirements
Twenty seven (27) quarter-credit hours of course work, as outlined below, are required for the undergraduate Certificate of Concentration in Women's Studies covering a range of disciplines and topics.

list of approved courses (83 KB) that fulfill these requirements is available from the Center for Women's Studies. Course offerings each term are listed in Learning Opportunities.

Undergraduate degree-seeking students wishing to sign up for and complete this certificate should contact the Undergraduate Director, Michelle Gibson, by their junior year of study or preferably earlier to give ample time for advising and coursework.



Certificate Requirements (total of 27 credit hours) 

I. Core Courses (9cr):
•Introduction to Women’s Studies 15 WMST 241 (3cr)
•Women and the Law 15 WMST 350 (3cr)
•Feminist Theory 15 WMST 380 (3cr)
II. Women’s Studies Electives (18cr):
From the Master List of courses approved for Women’s Studies credit, students should select six courses in the following areas (two of these six courses may be at the 200 level; the remainder must be at the 300 level or above):
•One course in women’s literature (3cr)
•One course in women’s history (3cr)
•One course on women in the social sciences or natural sciences (3cr)
•One course on women of color or women in international/global perspective (3cr)
•One Current Issues in Women’s Studies course 15 WMST 301 (3cr)
•One of the following three courses:
i. Women’s Studies Internship 15 WMST 490 (3cr) OR
ii. Independent Study 15 WMST 531, 532, 533 (3cr) OR
iii. One additional Women’s Studies course at the 300 level of above (3cr)

Students electing to take the Internship or Independent Study must consult with and obtain prior approval (one quarter in advance) from the Undergraduate Director at the Center for Women’s Studies before registering for either course.

Final Assessment/Evaluation:
All students receiving the Undergraduate Certificate in Women’s Studies are required to attend an exit interview and complete a short review/evaluation of their program in Women’s Studies. This process is intended to encourage students to reflect on the impact of the Certificate on their college experience and to provide the Center with feedback about the program.
