As an academic program, the Department of Women's Studies provides access to considerable research resources for its students and faculty. A wide variety of feminist journals and periodicals are housed in its offices in 620 Old Chem for students and faculty to peruse on site. A far larger Women's Studies collection, including videos, can be found in the UC Langsam Library as part of the university's general holdings and resources available through OhioLink. As a research center, the Department of Women's Studies has sponsored several research initiatives over its history. In the 1980s, the Department won funding from the Ohio Humanities Council and Fifth/Third Bank to prepare a history of protective labor legislation. It also worked with the Cincinnati Historical Society to co-produce a series of readers on the History of Cincinnati Women in 1983 and a video on the women of Rookwood Pottery in 1985. In the 1990s, it launched the UC Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) program, which continues to attract and retain young women interested in science and engineering careers by providing undergraduates with opportunities to engage in research with science and engineering faculty mentors.

Since the early 1990s, the Department's MA and MA/JD students have produced a wide range of fascinating and impressive interdisciplinary research projects as part of their culminating requirements. Examples of research paper topics include Black women visual artists, girls in women's prisons, the social construction of heterosexuality, prosecuting rape as a war crime in the former Yugoslavia, Mexican immigrant women in Kentucky, and women's virtual organizations. Students have also produced acclaimed videos such as "Lesbian Teenagers in High School" and "XY: Drag" to satisfy their research project requirement.
