Criteria for Women's Studies courses: 1. Include a minimum of 50 percent women- or gender-related material - namely in readings, lectures, written assignments and teaching aids (e.g. audio- visual material). 2. Study the subject in ways that take into account and recognize the value of feminist methods, theories, criticism, scholarship and pedagogy. 3. Emphasize diversity of women and their experiences by including that diversity wherever appropriate or by acknowledging the particular limitations in the scope of focus of the course. Guidelines/Questions that will assist in the preparation
of a Women's Studies course: 2. Does the course study women's traditions, myths, artwork,
experiences 3. Does the course study inequalities of gender in relation to (or how gender intersects with) inequalities of race, class, nation, religion, sexual orientation, physical (dis)ability, age, etc.? 4. Does the course include multi-cultural or international perspectives on women and gender and/or does it acknowledge the limitations of its scope or focus? 5. Does the course create a pedagogical environment that promotes active learning and respects multiple viewpoints, thereby enabling students to take responsibility for their own learning? Procedure
for obtaining approval of a Women's Studies course: 1. A brief description of the course. 2. A syllabus or course outline, including reading list. 3. A paragraph addressing how the course meets the above
criteria Faculty will be notified if the proposed course is
approved for inclusion. Should the Women's Studies Curriculum
Committee find the course inappropriate for listing as submitted, the
materials will be returned with suggestions for modifications where appropriate.
The faculty member is welcomed to resubmit the course for approval. In
order for a newly approved course to be cross-listed with Women's Studies
in One Stop class offerings, the request for approval should be received
by the department no later than the second week of classes, two quarters in
advance of the quarter in which the course will first be offered as a Women's Studies-approved course. |
