WS Course Guidelines

Criteria for Women's Studies courses:
1. Include a minimum of 50 percent women- or gender-related material - namely in  readings, lectures, written assignments and teaching aids (e.g. audio- visual material).

2. Study the subject in ways that take into account and recognize the value of     feminist methods, theories, criticism, scholarship and pedagogy.

3. Emphasize diversity of women and their experiences by including that     diversity wherever appropriate or by acknowledging the particular limitations     in the scope of focus of the course.

Guidelines/Questions that will assist in the preparation of a Women's Studies course:
1. Does the course investigate socially dominant constructions of gender and  use methods of inquiry and material that challenge those constructions?

2. Does the course study women's traditions, myths, artwork, experiences
and achievements?

3. Does the course study inequalities of gender in relation to (or how gender intersects with) inequalities of race, class, nation, religion, sexual orientation,   physical (dis)ability, age, etc.?

4. Does the course include multi-cultural or international perspectives on     women and gender and/or does it acknowledge the limitations of its scope     or focus?

5. Does the course create a pedagogical environment that promotes active     learning and respects multiple viewpoints, thereby enabling students to take     responsibility for their own learning?

Procedure for obtaining approval of a Women's Studies course:
Faculty wishing to propose the inclusion of a course in the list of approved Women's Studies courses should submit the following materials to the department for review by the Women's Studies Undergraduate Curriculum Committee:

1. A brief description of the course.

2. A syllabus or course outline, including reading list.

3. A paragraph addressing how the course meets the above criteria
    and guidelines.

Faculty will be notified if the proposed course is approved for inclusion. Should the Women's Studies Curriculum Committee find the course inappropriate for listing as submitted, the materials will be returned with suggestions for modifications where appropriate. The faculty member is welcomed to resubmit the course for approval. In order for a newly approved course to be cross-listed with Women's Studies in One Stop class offerings, the request for approval should be received by the department no later than the second week of classes, two quarters in advance of the quarter in which the course will first be offered as a Women's Studies-approved course.
