A&S Admission Requirements

Applicants who do not meet the admission requirements for A&S might be referred to one of UC's two-year colleges, Raymond Walters College or Clermont College. Credits earned in these colleges generally count toward the first two years of the A&S bachelor's degree. Admission to these colleges carries matriculated status and qualifies the student for financial aid and other benefits.

Students may also enroll as non-matricluated students without formal admission to any college. Registrants are not eligible for financial aid. However, credits earned in this status will be accepted in a baccalaureate program.

We will be happy to chat with you via e-mail about any questions you may have. Simply write us at ArtSci.Admission@uc.edu.

Thanks for looking into UC's McMicken College of Arts and Sciences. We hope to hear from you soon.

First-Year Students

You are a first-year student (freshman) if you have not attended another UC college or another institution since graduating from high school, even if you earned college credit while in high school. Freshman applicants should have graduated from an accredited secondary school and should have completed the following units:

  • 4 units of college-preparatory English
  • 3 units of college-preparatory mathematics
  • 2 units of science
  • 2 units of social science
  • 2 units of foreign language
  • 1 units of fine arts
  • 2 units of any of the above

Direct admission to McMicken College also requires a grade point average of at least 2.7 and a competitive combination of class rank and ACT/SAT scores.

First-year students apply through the UC's Office of Admissions. Applicants with an unusual amount of college-preparatory work in their first three years of high school might be admitted without completion of the diploma. Other applicants might be admitted who lack other requirements here if, in the judgment of the dean or the admissions officer, other factors in the applicant's background argue strongly for that student's probable success in meeting the academic standards in Arts & Sciences.

Transfer Students (from other institutions)

You are a transfer student if you have enrolled at another collegiate institution since graduating from high school. Transfer students apply through the UC's Office of Admissions. Transfer students need to submit transcripts for all secondary school and college-level work. A cumulative GPA of 2.0, including a 2.0 in the most recent college, is required for admission consideration. Admission to A&S is generally available for any off-campus applicants who have received the associate degree from an accredited college or university, whose GPA is 2.0 or higher, and who have completed English Composition and Math at the level of Intermediate Algebra or higher.

A&S accepts in transfer all credits for which a grade of C- or better, or a grade of "Pass," was received. In the case of credits earned at the University of Cincinnati, however, courses with a grade of D or better will apply. Other guidelines on transfer credits, such as those governed by the transfer module as established by the Ohio Board of Regents, are described in the "General University Information" of the college bulletin.

Semester credits are multiplied by 1.5 to convert them to quarter credits. New students are admitted as freshmen, sophomores, juniors or seniors based upon the number of transfer credits accepted rather than by a determination of the graduation date.

To determine whether courses from your previous institution have been given equivalents in UC's system consult Transfer.org.

Admission to A&S is generally available to transition students who have:

  • at least a 2.0 GPA in all college-level courses (both at UC and at other institutions)
  • successfully completed two quarters of English Composition or its equivalent, and
  • gained credit for Intermediate Algebra or its equivalent.

Students can check progress toward their degree on the Web Degree Audit Site.
