Allocated Department Research Support

Departments are provided with an annual allocation to provide research support below $2,000 per project. If the research support required is less than $2,000, faculty must use department allocated funds. If the support needed exceeds $2,000 or the department does not have sufficient allocated funds remaining, the faculty member can apply to the appropriate competitive program for the balance of a purchase below $2,000 that the department can not fully fund or for the full expenditure if it exceeds $2,000.

Faculty may use department allocated funds for expenditures approved under the three competitive programs of Collections Purchase, Direct Research Cost, and Research Collaboration. Please refer to these specific program guidelines for full explanation of eligible expenses, however, in general allocated funds may be used for:

  • Purchase of books, videos or other library materials;
  • Purchase of software or data sets;
  • Payment for technical or consulting services such as video-taping, laboratory analysis, etc.;
  • Expenses involved in conducting interviews or distributing surveys;
  • Expenses involved in bringing visiting scholars to the University of Cincinnati for research purposes.

The following guidelines govern the Allocated Research Support Fund:

  • Expenses that are funded by other Taft programs, such as faculty release time, faculty travel, graduate student fellowships, speakers and conferences, are not to be charged to the Allocated Research Support fund.  Independent student projects are not to be paid for with Allocated Research Support funds, but student activities which directly contribute to faculty research may be supported.
  • Each department shall, in a democratic fashion, determine the procedure it will use for allocating Research Support funds.
  • All expenses charged to the Research Support fund must either contribute to a faculty research project, or to improving the research infrastructure of the department.  An example of the latter would be purchasing books for the library to build a collection.  Use of Research Support funds for routing Departmental Operating Expenses may result in the loss of future funds.
  • Research Support funds may not be used to purchase computer hardware.
  • Material purchases (books, data sets, software) must be purchased and held in a manner that allows the widest possible use.  Whenever possible, such materials should be purchased through the University Libraries, to be held in circulating collections.

Procedures for Departmental Allocations

  • Charges against the departmental allocations will be processed by the Taft Secretary.
  • The expenses charged to this fund and the rationale for each must be listed in the departments’ annual Taft reports.
  • Departments may carry over funds from year to year.
