Publication Support

Policies and Procedures

The first priority is to provide publication subventions to publishers for publication for worthy scholarly/creative manuscripts. Publication subventions are justified when works worthy of publication would not be published without financial support. The fund will also consider subsidies to presses to translate into a second language the scholarly/creative publications of the faculty of Taft departments. A second, and lesser priority  is the support of publication costs to a maximum of $1,000. Taft faculty who are authors of books under contract to a press or accepted articles to a scholar/creative journal can request subsidies for indexing, translations, the preparation of photos, illustrations and maps, and accompanying copyrights.

Procedures for Publication Costs to a Maximum of $1,000  |  Cover Sheet

The request to cover publication costs must include the following:

  1. A letter concerning the nature and significance of the work (400 word limit);
  2. Correspondence with the prospective publisher, with proof that the work has been accepted for publication and that publication costs need to be covered by the author;
  3. An itemized budget (indexing, photos, illustrations, copyrights);
  4. Two page curriculum vitae.

Committee Procedures and Policies Grants to a Maximum of $1,000

The committee will take timely action on requests that have followed the procedures outlined above. Consideration of applications for publication costs will usually begin  in the Winter quarter if monies are available. (Given the overall priority: (1) original scholarly/creative works including translations or edited translations (2) collections, edited works, and unedited translations (3) publication costs to a maximum of $1,000.) The committee will also consider the quality of the scholarship or creative work the manuscript contains and the reputation for quality of the proposed publisher. Payments are made in US dollars only, up to a maximum specified by the Taft Faculty Executive Board. When payments are made for works to be published by foreign publishers, fluctuations in the value of the US dollar are not to be considered and such changes become the responsibility of the author or the publisher. The terms of the grant will include that  the publication shall acknowledge support of the Charles Phelps Taft Research Center, University of Cincinnati.
