Major
Degree Program Requirements
PRE-REQUISITE COURSES (9 cr) Students must
either take the following courses or place out of them before beginning
the major in Spanish. Students may count 253 toward the total number of
55 hours of credit for the major.
Spanish Composition & Conversation 251, 252, 253
BASIC COURSES (9 cr) All Spanish majors must
take the following basic courses first.
(3 cr) Writing in Spanish about Culture SPAN 300
(3 cr) Speaking in Spanish about Culture SPAN 301
(3 cr) Reading Hispanic Culture SPAN 302
CORE COURSES (18 cr) These required courses
may be taken in any sequence.
(3 cr) Introducción a las Tres Culturas 310
(3 cr) Latin America Today 311
(3 cr) Spain Today SPAN 312
(3 cr) Hispanic Culture in the US SPAN 313
(3 cr) Hispanic World in Film SPAN 314
(3 cr) Advanced Spanish Grammar Span 454
ELECTIVES (27 cr)
Any nine 15-SPAN courses at the 300 or 400 level (including 253 or 290
for those who start at the 200 level)
CAPSTONE (1 cr) Capstone
Project 481
Total hours required in the Spanish major: 55
During the last three quarters before graduation students may add the
one-credit Capstone Project
to any course numbered above 302, including Study Tours. To get Capstone
credit, you must fill out the Capstone
Project Registration Form and secure the signature of both the course
instructor and the Director of Undergraduate Studies in the first week
of the quarter.
Credits for the major can be obtained through study abroad or transfer.
The Department encourages students to spend as much time abroad as they
can.
