Minor / Certificate

Students working toward an undergraduate degree at UC can earn a minor, while non-degree students (e.g., graduate students, non-students) can earn an equivalent "(minor) certificate" (not to be confused with the Business Certificate).

Pre-Requisite Courses (0-18 credits)

Students must take the introductory sequences (111-112-113-114-115-116 or 101-102-103) or place out of them before beginning the minor. Up to 10 hours of foreign-language credit may be awarded to students placing out of introductory courses.

Degree Program Requirements (30 credits)

A. Composition and Conversation. Students must take Composition and Conversation (251-252-253) unless they place out of it or receive permission from the Undergraduate Advisor to begin with higher-level courses (in which case they will take upper-level courses as electives toward the minor instead). FREN 251-252-253 count as electives toward the minor provided the student earns a B or higher.

B. Required Courses (15 credits). All French minors must take the following courses:
(3 cr) Writing in French from Cultural and Literary Perspectives FREN 300
(3 cr) Writing and Speaking in French about Culture and Literature FREN 301
(3 cr) French Phonetics FREN 302
(3 cr) Introduction to French Literature FREN 310
(3 cr) Advanced French Composition FREN 424 (to be taken after FREN 301)

C. Electives. Students may take any 15-FREN courses at the 300/400-level (including 251-252-253 for those starting at the 200-level and earning a B or higher). At least one of them should be a literature course.

Total hours required in the French minor: 30

Credits required for the minor can also be obtained through study abroad or transfer.

Students planning to earn a minor should fill out an "Application for Minor" form (available in 714 Old Chemistry) and turn it in to the Undergraduate Advisor. Upon completion of the above requirements, the students must also contact the Undergraduate Advisor and fill out the "Completion of Minor" form.
