The French language originated in France, of course, where it is spoken by sixty million people, but it is also spoken in thirty-nine other countries. Within Europe, French is spoken in Belgium, Luxembourg, Monaco, and Switzerland. In North America, French is spoken in Canada and in the state of Louisiana. French is spoken in the island nations of Haiti, Martinique, Guadeloupe, French Polynesia (Tahiti), and New Caledonia. It is one of the principal languages of Africa, spoken in Algeria, Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Chad, Congo, Ivory Coast, Djibouti, Gabon, Guinea, Madagascar, Mali, Mauritania, Morocco Niger, the Central African Republic, Reunion, Rwanda, Senegal, Togo, Tunisia, and Zaire. In Asia, French is spoken in Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam.
