PhD in Romance Languages

The doctoral program in Romance Languages represents an exciting shift away from traditional chronological programs narrowly focused on French or Spanish literature toward an exploration of the textual connections between the Old and New Worlds, between the literature of established cultures and that of emerging ones, between traditional forms of expression and alternative or technological ones. This doctoral program engages students and faculty in the rapidly shifting scholarly dialogues of the twenty-first century post-colonial world and prepares them for a variety of professional positions both within and beyond academia.

Students may propose dissertation research in any of four areas or any combination that bridges them: Spanish European Studies, French European Studies, Latin American Studies, and Francophone Studies.

Admission to the doctoral program presumes a broadly based MA (like the one at UC) requiring mastery of a literary field and including knowledge of at least two Romance languages.
