Sylvia Sellers-GarciaAssistant Professor
Professional SummarySylvia Sellers-GarcĂa received her doctorate in Latin American history from the University of California, Berkeley, in 2009. She previously completed an MPhil in Latin American Studies at St. Antony's College, Oxford, and a B.A. in Comparative Literature at Brown University. Her research focuses on colonial Latin America, specifically 18th and early 19th century Guatemala -- the region that today includes southern Mexico and Central America. Her current work, based on a recently completed dissertation entitled "Distant Guatemala: Reading Documents from the Periphery," examines the conception of distance in the colonial period. Focusing on the life of documents -- how documents were created, carried, and stored -- her research delves into the fascinating lives of colonial mailmen, archivists, and scribes. |
