National Stature

The philosophy department's graduate and undergraduate programs continue to grow in regional and national stature.

  • The department's doctoral program is ranked in the top ten nationally in three specialties: philosophy of biology, philosophy of mind/cognitive science, and aesthetics.
  • During 2005-2006, faculty published numerous journal articles and participated in international conferences and other scholarly institutes; two were Charles P. Taft Research Center Fellows; one was named Charles P. Taft Professor and Fellow of the Graduate School.
  • During 2005-2006, doctoral students gave a total of 15 presentations at regional, national, and international professional conferences; one published a research article in a major philosophy journal and served as the University Research Council Distinguished Dissertation Fellow; another won the university-wide Graduate Teaching Excellence Award.
  • Several philosophy students have gone on to graduate school in philosophy at, e.g., University of Iowa and University of Illinois.
