Placement Testing
All entering students*
who have taken German on the high-school level must take the Language
Placement Examination (which can be taken online by clicking
here). The password for the test is: bearcats1. IMPORTANT: Print out
the results page when the test ends. You
should be able to return to the web site to get your score again if you did not print out
the results by entering your information and pressing the "Resume" button.
On the basis of these test results, the
language requirement may be met in one of the following ways:
1. Credit through
the Placement Test: Incoming high-school students can get up to
ten hours of college credit by taking the Placement Test and validating
the results by successfully completing the next higher level course
with a "C" or higher. After completing the test, a hard
copy of the test results should be made and taken to your college office
to be kept in your file; any credit you receive will be awarded automatically
after your placement test has been validated by completing the assigned
course with a C or better. If you provide an email address where
asked at the beginning of the test, your results will also be emailed
to you.
2. Fulfilling
requirements: Students beginning a new language, or not scoring
sufficiently high on the Placement Examination, may fulfill the requirement
by successfully completing the following:
a.
A three-quarter sequence of Accelerated Elementary German (104,
105, 106),
5 credits each, for a total of
15 credits; or
b. Two
three-quarter sequences in Elementary and Intermediate German (101,
102, 103, plus 201, 202, 203),
3 credits each, for a total of 18 credits; or
c.
Two three-quarter sequences in Elementary and Intermediate Swedish,
3
credits each, for a total
of 18 credits. (Please note: There is no formal
placement examination for Swedish.
The instructor will determine the
appropriate level of the student.)
* Students who have
participated in the Advanced Placement Program in high school and have
received scores of three, four, or five on the national examinations
receive college credit without further validation. These students should
see Prof. Obrath, the Undergraduate Director, for guidance in course
selection.
AP scores of
4 or 5:
9 credit hours are awarded plus 9 credit
hours for placing out of the Language
Requirement. Total credit hours awarded 18.
AP score of 3:
6 credit hours are awarded plus 9 credit
hours for placing out of the Language
Requirement. Total credit hours awarded 15.
