Curriculum
On average, eight courses per year are designated doctoral-level seminars. Usually half concentrate on post-1900 literature. The remainding courses concern literary theory, composition pedagogy or literary works of earlier periods that raise issues pertinent to twentieth-century literary studies. This advanced-level curriculum is supported by a historically comprehensive slate of Master's courses, which can supplement your doctoral coursework and help prepare you for the doctoral exams.
If you choose to pursue a doctoral degree at the University of Cincinnati, the English Department requires you to complete Contexts for Twentieth Century Literary Study, a core course in twentieth-century studies. This course surveys the major historical and theoretical issues influencing literary study in this century and is a collaboration among several faculty and explores the major currents of twentieth-century social, literary and intellectual history.
You must take at least one 800-level course in your dissertation area and at least two graduate-level courses in each exam area.
You must complete 54 hours of coursework to complete the doctoral degree. A maximum of four workshops -- or 16 hours -- can apply to this total.
