Graduate Assistant Teaching Training Program

The Department of English Graduate Assistant Teaching Training Program is a seven month process that begins in September with Orientation and continues through fall and winter quarters with two Teaching Practicum courses and a Teaching College Writing course. New Graduate Assistants will teach English Composition 101 in fall quarter and English Composition 102 in winter quarter.

The philosophy behind this comprehensive process is that teachers learn from teaching and from talking with one another about teaching, as well as from scholarly materials. The English Composition program closely supervises the Graduate Assistants and offers various types of support as a way of assuring that GAs are meeting departmental standards.

Teaching College Writing

A composition readings course designed to introduce students to teaching college writing from historical, cultural, and socio/political perspectives. In addition to reading some of the important studies in composition scholarship, students work with issues embedded in the phrase "multiple literacies" and focus on the significance and negotiation of critical literacy.

Teaching Practicum I/II

These courses prepare graduate assistants to teach undergraduate courses in writing, and they are required of all first-year Graduate Assistants and Student Lecturers.

Topics in Composition

These courses focus on particular topics, issues, or theoretical challenges in writing instruction. Topics vary from year to year.
