Economics
with Honors
The
Department of Economics enables its outstanding undergraduate
students to graduate with ‘Honors in Economics’
or with ‘High Honors in Economics’. In order
to qualify for one of these accolades, the following
requirements must be satisfied at the time of graduation:
-
Completion of all Arts and Sciences and Economics
Major requirements. For more information, see the
A&S College Office, McMicken Hall or the Department
of Economics.
-
Completion of two quarters of Honors Seminars, 15-ECON-431,
432. The Honors Seminar courses are offered each
quarter. No other course can be used as a substitute
for the seminar requirement.
-
Completion of ‘Quantitative Economics’
as one of the Fields for the B.A. in Economics.
The remaining field(s) can be chosen from the fields
requirement list for the B.A. in Economics.
-
Satisfactory Completion of the Senior Thesis.
In general, the thesis is the end-product of the
work done in the Honors Seminars.
-
Minimum grade point average of
a) 3.5 in Economics and 3.3 overall for Honors;
b) 3.8 in Economics and 3.5 overall for High Honors.
The
GPAs must be attained at graduation time. In order
to qualify for ‘Honors Standing’ before
graduation, the student does not necessarily have
to maintain the required averages at all times.
As long as there is good reason to believe that
the minimum GPAs will be reached at graduation time,
the ‘Honors Standing’ will be maintained.
The decision about ‘Honors Standing’
will be made by the Departmental Honors Committee
at appropriate intervals. ‘Honors Standing’
provides students with the benefit of being informed
of all College Honors activities, of being designated
as an Honors students in recommendation letters
and other correspondence regarding the students,
and of being able to take the Honors Seminar courses.
If
you intend to graduate with Honors or High Honors and
you want to be given Honors standing within the Department
of Economics, you should complete and return departmental
Honors registration form. Upon completion of the requirements
for graduation with honors, you should complete and
return a departmental Honors checklist.
In
addition to the Departmental Honors accolades there
are also the ‘College Honors’ and ‘College
High Honors’ accolades. For information on the
requirements contact the Director of the University
Honors Scholars Program, 556-6252.
