An evolutionary paleobiologist and paleoecologist, with research and teaching interests in biodiversity throughout geological time and in the present day. Current projects include the investigation of geographic and environmental selectivity during global mass extinctions and major diversification events; assessment of anthropogenic impacts on shallow-water molluscan communities as recorded in skeletal accumulations; numerical modeling of time-averaged fossil assemblages; and assessments of the distributions of animals and plants along present and past environmental gradients.

Research Information

Research Interests

A unifying thread in my research is an interest in biodiversity throughout geological time and in the present day. Currently, I am focusing on the interpretation of major changes in global biodiversity during the history of life, including brief intervals  when global biodiversity dramatically decreased (mass extinctions) or increased (radiations).  I am also interested in: analyses of shells accumulating on present-day seafloors to better understand the formation of ancient fossil assemblages and to help diagnose recent, anthropogenic changes in coastal environments; the numerical modeling of the formation of fossil assemblages; and distributions of ancient communities of marine organisms in association with environmental gradients.   I also collaborate with colleagues in Biology and Geography in studying the distributions and abundances of plant species along a present-day urban-to-wildland gradient. 

Here is a list of my recent and current students:

--Austin Hendy (Ph.D. 2007) worked on the Cenozoic record of biodiversity in New Zealand and elsewhere, which he used as a testing ground for the investigation of Cenozoic diversification at regional through global scales.


--Kate Bulinski (Ph.D. 2008) investigated quantitative properties of samples collected in the type Cincinnatian (e.g., evenness and the aggregate contributions of rare taxa), and how these properties affect the composite-diversity patterns observed at broader regional levels.

--Devin Buick (Ph.D. 2009) dissected the relationship between morphological variation, paleobiogeography, and diversification in the prolific Mesozoic-Cenozoic bivalve genus Cucullaea; along the way, he has pioneered a variety of new methods for analyzing and visualizing morphological variation.

--Chad Ferguson (Ph.D. 2009) used the subfossil record at a study area in Florida Bay to diagnose the stratigraphic preservability of anthropogenic environmental changes.
 
--Jacalyn Wittmer (M.S. 2009) investigated the global paleobiogeography and regional paleoecology of tentaculitoids, a prolific, but enigmatic early to mid Paleozoic group.  

--Anne Lagomarcino (M.S. 2011) studied species-area relationships among Cretaceous biotas worldwide, with a special emphasis on differences between epicontinental seas and open-ocean facing settings.  

--Sarah Kolbe (Ph.D. 2012) investigated regional, present-day variations in the distributions and abundances of plant species, including invasives, in association with the urban-to-wildland gradient in southwestern Ohio and their relationships to a range of possible anthropogenic effects.   

--Andrew Zaffos (Ph.D. in progess) is calibrating the relationship between biotic turnover and the structure of faunal gradients at multiple hierarchical scales in space and time, including the Middle Devonian of the Appalachian Basin and the Cenozoic global latitudinal diversity gradient .

--Kelsey Feser (Ph.D. in progress) is diagnosing anthropogenic environmental impacts on living and subfossil molluscan assemblages in seagrass beds at several localities arrayed around the island of St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands.

--Gary Motz (Ph.D. in progress) is studying the role of escalation in directly mediating major increases observed in taxonomic diversity among venerid bivalves throughout the Cenozoic, with a focus on the Miocene.
