The Oesper Award Program and Symposium

UC Chemistry and the Cincinnati Section of the American Chemical Society are pleased to annouce the 2017 Oesper Award Winner

The 2017 Oesper Award will honor Matthew Platz, Distinguished University Professor of Chemistry Emeritus, of The Ohio State University, and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs of the University of Hawaii Hilo. His research involves time resolved spectroscopy of short lived intermediates of interest to mechanistic chemists, synthetic chemists, spectroscopists and theoreticians. These intermediates include carbenes, nitrenes, diradicals and excited states. Platz has published over 300 peer reviewed papers and holds over a dozen patents in the field of light activated pathogen eradication. He served as Director of Chemistry of the National Science Foundation from 2010-2012 where he led the development of the Sustainable Chemistry, Engineering and Materials (SUSChEM) program. He has won numerous awards including the James Flack Norris Award for Physical Organic Chemistry, the ACS Cope Scholar Award and the Remsen Award.
