Professional Summary

Anne Sisson Runyan, Professor in the Department of Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at the University of Cincinnati (UC), with a courtesy appointment in political science, holds a PhD in International Relations from The American University in Washington, DC. She previously founded and directed women’s studies programs at the State University of New York (SUNY) at Potsdam and Wright State University, where she also held appointments in political science, and has taught in Canada and Europe, as well as studied and guest lectured in many parts of the United States and the world. A pioneer in the field of feminist international relations, and a recipient of the Eminent Scholar Award from the Feminist Theory and Gender Studies Section of the International Studies Association, she is the co-author of Global Gender Issues (now in a third edition), the co-editor of Gender and Global Restructuring (now in a second edition), has published widely in the field of feminist world politics, and is working on a book on transnational feminist theory. At UC, she teaches such core and elective graduate courses as Global Feminist Theory, Feminist Research, Gender and International Relations, and Gender and Globalization, as well as serving as a chair or reader on MA and PhD committees and for independent studies, especially in the area of global feminisms. As Department Head, for seven years, she was responsible for the overall coordination and development of the department (which offers a major, minor, MA, MA/JD joint degree, and graduate certificate, with 10 core and nearly 100 affiliated faculty); its relationship and activities with its community support group, the Friends of Women’s Studies (which funds scholarships, grants, and endowments); its role in the life of the university and the interdisciplinary field of women’s studies. She also served, for several years, as Graduate Director, overseeing the MA, MA/JD, and Graduate Certificate programs. She was additionally the Project Director for the department's federally-funded student and faculty exchange program on "Women's Human Rights, Citizenships, and Identities in a North American Context," in cooperation with five other women's/gender studies programs in Mexico, Canada, and the United States, and was the local program chair for the 2008 National Women's Studies Association (NWSA) Annual Conference in Cincinnati, Ohio, on "Resisting Hegemonies: Race and Sexual Politics in Nation/Region/Empire." Dr. Runyan is on Academic Leave at UC for school years 2008-9 and 2009-10, to complete four books, including the afore-mentioned Global Gender Issues in the New Millennium (third edition, with Dr. V. Spike Peterson, Westview Press, 2010) and Gender and Global Restructuring (second edition, with Dr. Marianne H. Marchand, Routledge, 2010).
