Beck, Richard Allan
Associate Professor 401G Braunstein Hall (513) 556-3426 richard.beck@uc.edu |
My formal training is in Earth Science (B.S. and M.S. in Earth Science from Iowa State University and Ph.D. in Earth Science from University of Southern California) and another Master of Information Science (M.I.S. from University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign). My first Master's thesis focused on the origin and timing of Laramide foreland Basins. My PhD dissertation focused on the origin and behavior of the Indus and Ganges Rivers since 16 million years B.P. and the orgin and timing of the ophiolitic belt along the Pakistan-Afghan border. My last Master's thesis focused on plans for a National Emergency Mapping Informaiton System and supporting imaging and communications satellite data networks for environmental and public safety applications. |

Dunning, Nicholas P
Professor, Undergraduate Director 401 Braunstein Hall (513) 556-3436 nicholas.dunning@uc.edu |
Nicholas Dunning grew up on the Island of Oahu in Hawaii, where he developed a fascination with tropical environments and cultural adaptation. By virtue of once having picked up the wrong book in the library (and reading it anyway), he developed a passionate interest in Maya civilization. Dunning has spent the past 25 years studying the intriguing environment of the Maya Lowlands and the nature of human environmental adaptations, both past and present, in this region. Along the way, he earned BA and MA degrees from the University of Chicago and a PhD from the University of Minnesota, all in geography. Dunning has authored two books and some 60 articles and book chapters on the Maya world. Occasionally, he does research in eastern North America, the eastern Mediterranean, and Oceania. Dunning is a Professor of Geography at the University of Cincinnati, where his students affectionately (he hopes) refer to him as “Dr. Dirt,” because of his fascination with soil. He resides in Cincinnati with his wife, Betsy Lazaron, a practicing family physician, and three daughters – all of whom like to play in the dirt, but none of whom want to become dirt doctors. |

Eisner, Wendy R.
Associate Professor, Graduate Program Director 400A Braunstein Hall (513) 556-3926 wendy.eisner@uc.edu |
I am both an environmental scientist and archaeologist, trained as a palynologist in America and Europe. I hold a B.A. in anthropology, an M.A. in social anthropology, a Ph.D. in archaeology, and a Doctor of Science in geography. I have worked in the Arctic for over 20 years, doing research in Northeastern Siberia, Greenland, and Northern Alaska. My current funded research is based on the Coastal Plain of Arctic Alaska. My most recent research is specifically concerned with the impact of humans on the environment. My colleagues and I are working with Alaskan Native elders to incorporate their perceptions and understanding of their environment in order to improve our scientific knowledge of the Arctic region. |

Hinkel, Kenneth M
Professor 400-F Braunstein Hall (513) 556-3430 kenneth.hinkel@uc.edu |
My general interest in the Earth Sciences focuses on the topic of "surficial processes," a study of the physical and chemical processes that occur near the earth's surface. The interdisciplinary nature of the discipline is reflected in my training, as I have degrees in both Physical Geography (MS) and Geology (Ph.D). I have been conducting climate and geomorphological research in polar regions for the past 30 years, with continuous funding from the National Science Foundation. I have published over 100 research articles, books and book chapters, serve on several editorial boards, and I am past-President of the United States Permafrost Association. |

Assistant Professor 400B Braunstein Hall (513) 556-3424 changjoo.kim@uc.edu |
Changjoo (CJ) Kim earned his Ph. D. at The Ohio State University, Columbus in 2004. His research and teaching interests are in geographic information science, urban transportation, networks, location analysis, and spatial modeling. His research addresses theoretical and practical questions in urban and economic geography through the application of GIS methods. He investigates a range of urban and economic concerns including transportation, urban sprawl, commuting, airline industry, retailing, etc. His current research focuses on the spatial and temporal characteristics of urban traffic phenomena with respect to commuting. |

McTague, Colleen
Assistant Professor 401D Braunstein Hall (513) 556-3249 colleen.mctague@uc.edu |
Colleen McTague is an urban political geographer and earned her M.A. (1999) and Ph.D. (2004) in geography from the University of Cincinnati. For the past eight years she has studied the geography of local elections, focusing on the "neighborhood effect" (an influence operating in the immediate local context affecting voter political choice) and the impact and influence of social networks on voter behavior within the milieux of families, friends, and neighbors. Her urban interests include the political, social, cultural, and economic impacts of the temporary urban labor market in Cincinnati, Ohio. |

Townsend-Small, Amy
Assistant Professor 605 Geology-Physics Building (513) 556-3762 amy.townsend-small@uc.edu |
I study carbon and nitrogen cycling in marine, freshwater, and terrestrial environments, with an interest in using elemental and isotopic signatures to identify perturbations in these biogeochemical cycles. My current projects include (in no particular order): 1), carbon sequestration and greenhouse gas emissions in urban ecosystems; 2), impacts of global change on carbon export in the Ganges River, India; 3), carbon and nitrogen cycling in Mississippi River headwater streams of the midwest; and 4), biogeochemistry of rivers and lakes in the Alaskan Arctic. If you are interested in joining the lab as an undergraduate or graduate student researcher, please contact me via email. |
