English Compostion
Housed in the Department of English & Comparative Literature, and consistent with a goal of that department to educate students to respond to contemporary society from a broad-based literary and cultural perspective, the purpose of the English Composition Program is to empower students to become confident and responsible writers, both in college and beyond.
Toward that end, one broad goal is to teach students that writing is a way of thinking and that in the very act of writing about a particular subject for a particular audience, the writer will discover new knowledge; a second broad goal is to let students know that writing is something they can learn to do and that frequent writing is one of the best ways to become a successful writer; and a third broad goal is to show students that writing and reading are interrelated and to teach them to read not only to glean information from a piece of writing, but also to observe the writer at work and, in that process, to discover a range of strategies available to writers.
