Mission

The Master of Arts in Communication prepares students for future excellence at the Ph.D. level or for careers in their chosen profession. This two-year degree provides a comprehensive foundation in communication studies and flexibility to adapt the program to your goals.

Coursework: Minimum of 33 total hours

  • 12 Hours Required Courses (4 required courses)

  • 12 Hours of Electives
    A minimum of nine hours must be Communication credits
    These twelve hours do not include:
    • COMM 8092 Teaching in Communication
    • COMM 8093 Introduction to Graduate Studies
    • COMM 8094 Academic and Professional Preperation
    • COMM 8095 Internship
  • 3 - 9 Thesis or Praxis hours

Additional Specifications

  • The minimum number of hours a full-time load for graduate students receiving assistantships and/or scholarships is 12 hours of graduate coursework per semester.
  • All students complete a Masters Thesis, an independently developed and executed research project, or praxis research project, an applied study based on work or field experience. Students may register for up to 9 thesis or praxis with an advisor.
  • Part-time students may register for between three and nine hours per semester. They must complete the 33 hours of required coursework. Part-Time students have seven years to complete the degree.
  • COMM 8093 Introduction to Graduate Studies, COMM 8094 Academic and Professional Prep, and 2-hour Communication electives such as COMM 8095 Internship and COMM 8061 Directed Problems do not count toward the 12 hour elective requirement, unless an exception is approved.
