Application Information

General Instructions

Applications to the program are submitted online through the University of Cincinnati Graduate School webpage (http://www.grad.uc.edu/). A completed student file must include application, official academic transcripts, letters of reference, personal goal statement, and verified GRE scores. The file will not be reviewed until it is complete.

Have GRE score sent electronically (go to www.gre.com for instructions; UC institutional code is 1833).

Send the following information directly to the department via regular mail:

  • cover letter stating the desired term of admission and indication of full-time or part-time status
  • personal goal statement
  • official academic transcripts
  • three letters of reference that speak to the applicant's motivation and ability to undertake graduate study

Deadline

The deadline for full-time student applications is February 15 for the following academic year. Part-time applicant files must be complete four weeks prior to the desired quarter of admission for review.

Graduate Assistantship Eligibility and Award Criteria

All full-time applicants are considered for financial assistance on a competitive basis for the following academic year, depending on funding availability. Part-time students are not eligible for financial assistance. Information will be added to applicant files as received, but files will not be reviewed until complete.

The following criteria are used in making decisions concerning admission and financial awards:

  • Completion of a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university in Communication or related major
  • Undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or above
  • Graduate Record Examination (GRE) score of 1000 (verbal + quantitative) or better, plus over 3.5 analytical
  • For international students, a TOEFL score of 640 or better
  • Assessment of three letters of recommendation from professors or others who can speak to the applicant's ability/achievement/potential/motivation for undertaking graduate study
  • Assessment of the student's goals in pursuing the theoretical study of human communication.
