Part-time Faculty With Teaching and Non-teaching Assignments

Term adjunct and lecturer and annually appointed adjuncts can perform non-teaching duties as long as their total workload is below the maximum FTE% as stated in the University Guidelines for Part-time Faculty Appointment.

Based on current calculations of 18% FTE representing a 3-credit hour course with 30 hours of classroom time, the following credit hour contact hour, and clock hour conversions apply:

Given these definitions of contact hours and clock hours as they relate to FTE%, then the following amount of time is available for adjuncts and lecturers to perform other duties:

Term-Appointed Adjunct/Lecturer
Teaching one 3-credit course

Maximum FTE 49%
One 3-credit Course 18%
Difference 31%
Clock hours available

52.7 per quarter (31 X 1.7)

Term-Appointed Adjunct/Lecturer
Teaching two 3-credit courses

Maximum FTE 49%
Two 3-credit Course 36%
Difference 13%
Clock hours available

22 per quarter (13 X 1.7)

Annually-Appointed Adjunct/Lecturer
Teaching three 3-credit courses

Maximum FTE 64%
Three 3-credit Course 54%
Difference 10%
Clock hours available

17 per quarter (10 X 1.7)

Units should not assign duties to adjuncts and lecturers beyond the maximum allowable clock hours. Except for emergency classroom staffing needs, approvals to appoint adjuncts and lecturers beyond the FTE limits will not be granted. We must ensure that part-time faculty do not work full-time hours.
