Definitions of Part-time Faculty

  • Part-time faculty may hold titles in the Adjunct series:
    Adjunct Instructor
    Adjunct Assistant Professor
    Adjunct Associate Professor
    Adjunct Professor
  • Part-time faculty have FTEs equaling less than 100%
    Hiring procedures, benefits, pay schedule, re-appointments and union representation will depend upon the FTE of the part-time position defined and approved.
  • Bargaining Unit/AAUP Represented Adjuncts
    Part-time faculty with FTE of 65% to 99% are represented by the AAUP and covered by the UC/AAUP Agreement. The UC/AAUP Agreement should be consulted for information instead of this document.
  • Annual Adjuncts
    Part-time faculty with FTE of 50% to 64% for each academic term are annually appointed adjuncts.
  • Term/Quarter Adjuncts
    Part-time faculty with FTE of 3% to 49%(variable each term of appointment) are term-appointed adjuncts. They are paid for the level of service assigned each quarter. Their FTE can range from 3% to 49% depending on their work assignments.
