Requirement for UGS Awards

The following information comes from The University of Cincinnati, Division of Research and Advanced Studies, Graduate Awards Manual (update by the Division, January 1999), page 1-2.

The information contained in this manual applies to all graduate students whose assistantship (GA) and tuition scholarship (UGS) awards are underwritten by University general funds. These general funds are allocated through and monitored by the Division of Research and Advanced Studies. The GA funds are transferred annually by the Division to the colleges.

Although graduate assistantship and tuition scholarship awards from other University funding sources and external sources are not specifically covered by this manual, the Division encourages each academic unit to apply the policies stated herein to those awards. Graduate Student Helper appointees and Graduate Student Lecturer appointments also are not covered by this manual.

University Graduate Scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic merit.

1) The University Graduate Scholarship (UGS) is a University funded tuition scholarship which covers all or a portion of instructional fees for full-time graduate students (for these purposes, 12 credit hours per quarter).

  • a. Recipients must have completed fewer than 260 graduate credits (or 209 if their master's degree is from another institution) and will not surpass 260/ 209 graduate credit hours during the next quarter, and must be registered for at least 12 graduate credits per quarter, exclusive of hours taken as audit.
  • b. Those registered for more than 19 credits will be billed on a per credit hour rate for 20 or more hours.
