Application
Fill out both sides of The Application to Minor in African and African American Studies and submit it to the Department Secretary. We encourage you to declare your minor early so that we can best assist you with course selection, career options, and graduate school information. If we do not know that you are an officially declared minor in African and African American Studies, we cannot get important information to you. Applications will not be accepted during the quarter that you plan on graduating.
On your initial application, we ask you to develop a plan for your individualized minor in African and African American Studies. You can change your mind later on. You need not adhere to the courses that you list on your initial application. We encourage you to revise your plan as you get further along in your course work.
Make a list of the courses you have already taken in African and African American Studies as well as those you plan on taking that work well with your interests. If you would like to supplement your minor with courses from outside the department, list those as well. However, please be aware that the Curriculum Committee might not accept all courses taken outside the department. For all courses taken outside the Department of African and African American Studies (this includes African and African American Studies courses taken through the College of Evening and Continuing Education), keep a copy of the syllabus. You will need a syllabus for each course that you take outside the Department for credit.
The application also asks you to identify your interests and to discuss how you might benefit from a minor in African and African American Studies. If you are unsure of what to say, please discuss your ideas with any African and African American Studies faculty member. Students needing further guidance should consult the Faculty Coordinator of the Minor.
After the Curriculum Committee meets and approves your application, you will be notified that you are officially enrolled in the minor. Please keep in mind that while you may apply at any time, the Curriculum Committee reviews applications only three times each year.
