Suggested Programs of Study

Four Year A&S Student
Five Year Part Time/Transfer Student

Planning Your Schedule

Students typically spend their freshman, sophomore, and if needed, pre-junior years fulfilling core requirements in the major and A&S distribution requirements. Students should spend their junior and senior years taking electives and advanced coursework in the major. It is expected that all students will spend at least two years as officially declared majors.

Students should make every effort to fulfill as many of their A&S distribution requirements as possible before their junior year. Many core courses in African and African American Studies can be used to satisfy requirements for either the major in African and African American Studies or to fulfill A&S distribution requirements. For example, African History (301, 302, 303) can be used in several ways.

It can either fulfill a core requirement for the African and African American Studies major or it can fulfill an A&S history requirement or it can be counted toward electives within the African and African American Studies major.

In fulfilling A&S distribution requirements, students should get a copy of A&S College Requirements Checklist and read them carefully. There are 8 areas that students must satisfy for distribution. Effective fall 2001, the following 22 African and African American Studies courses fulfill A&S distribution requirements.

Foreign Languages (area 2)

  • Elementary Swahili (111, 12, 113)
  • Intermediate Swahili (114, 115, 116) for 18 credits or
  • Swahili (117, 118, 119) for 15 credits

History (area 5)

  • African and African American History (322, 323, 324)
  • African History (301, 302, 303)

Literature (area 6)

  • African and African American Literature (310, 311, 312)
  • Black Drama (245, 246)

Behavioral & Social Sciences (area 7)

  • Introduction to African and African American Studies (101) (formerly Introduction to the Black Experience)
  • Sociology of the Black Community (234, 235, 236)

Humanities (area 8)

  • Black Film (404)

African and African American Studies majors can count all A&S approved African and African American Studies courses either toward various A&S distribution requirements or to fulfill requirements in the major. You cannot count one course twice. For example, if you take 18 credits of African and African American History and African History, you can count 9 credits toward the major and 9 credits toward you’re A&S distribution requirements. We encourage students to take as many of these core courses as possible during the freshman and sophomore years so that students have maximum choice in how to apply these courses toward your degree.

In fulfilling the A&S language requirement, we encourage majors to complete 15-18 credits of French, Spanish, Portuguese or Swahili. Majors prepare for study abroad by gaining a working knowledge of languages spoken by people of African descent in Francophone Africa and Haiti, in Brazil and Latin America, in continental Africa, and throughout the African Diaspora. Learning a language is important for study abroad.

The following schedules are guides to assist majors in planning. Both schedules encourage students to take Introduction to African and African American Studies (AFAM 101) during the freshman year. This course can be used to determine eligibility for the major, to fulfill A&S distribution requirements, and/or as an elective in the major.

The following schedules also encourage majors to take Research and Writing Workshop in African and African American Studies (401). This course will become a core requirement under new requirements for the major. We also recommend that majors take at least two topical seminars even though only one seminar is now required.
