Declaring a major has several simple steps.
- Get a copy of your transcript from your A&S College advisor. You will need this to verify that you are eligible to declare a major.
- Fill out the Declaration of Major form, available in the A&S College Office and in the Department of African and African American Studies.
- Fill out the Application to Major in African and African American Studies form available in the Department of African and African American Studies.
- Schedule an appointment with the Undergraduate Advisor in African and African American Studies. Bring your transcript and completed copies both of your A&S declaration and departmental application to the meeting. The Undergraduate Advisor will keep your transcript and departmental application.
- File your Declaration of Major form with the A&S College Office. You will not receive official notification from the A&S College Office. Four weeks after you declare your major with A&S, contact them and request verification that your major has been declared. Officially declared African and African American Studies get priority registration in closed courses. It is important that you verify that you are an officially declared major.
- Make an appointment with your new faculty advisor to help you plan your course of study within the major. The Undergraduate Advisor will assign you to a faculty advisor in your area of interest. Based on when you declare your major, you will be encouraged to follow either the 4 year or the 5 year plan of study.
All students wishing to declare a major in African and African American Studies must have either an overall 2.0 GPA or have received a grade of "B" or above in AFAM 101 Introduction to African and African American Studies (formerly Introduction to the Black Experience).
