Why African American Studies at UC?

The Department of African & African American Studies at UC has a legacy of academic excellence dating back to 1970. African & African American Studies majors design their own programs, and each student is encouraged to develop an area of concentration within the major. Areas of concentration aim to provide students with a body of information and skills reflecting their personal interests, career plans and/or graduate school aspirations.

One strong focus of the department is preparing students for graduate and professional schools in areas such as public policy, sociology, literature, history, law, medicine and business. In addition, the skills of analysis, research, reading and writing that a student majoring in African American studies acquires are highly valued in a wide range of positions in private industry, business, social services and education.

There are many reasons for taking classes in African and African American Studies even if one does not become a major. We present the opportunity to fill knowledge gaps in the history and contributions to the world of Africans and their descendants. Thirty-five years after the founding of the African American Studies programs and departments in the USA, there are still too many Americans who do not realize the centrality of this experience to the creation of the Americas, and to other parts of the world, principally now regarding Europe.
