About European Studies
European Studies is an initiative of faculty from UC’s College of Arts and Sciences that provides opportunities for studying the multifaceted nature of a changing Europe – its history; its languages; its cultural, political, economic, and social fabric; and its borders. Starting with the academic year 2006-07, European Studies will not only offer courses on the graduate level but also an Undergraduate Certificate.
European Studies (ES) was created in 2000 with the generous grant of $150,000 from the Charles Phelps Taft Memorial Fund as well as the support of the provost and the dean of Arts and Sciences. Since then, a collective of interested faculty from History, German Studies, Romance Languages & Literatures, Political Sciences, and Sociology has developed a dynamic and growing program in ES that has garnered highly competitive national and regional funding, including grants from the Ohio Humanities Council and the National Endowment for the Humanities.
