Rhetoric and Professional Writing Track | Requirement Checklist
The recently revised English major (for all students declaring in 08A and after) enables students to explore the wide range of literatures, theories, cultures, and genres in the interdisciplinary field known as English Studies. While still featuring a strong literary core, the new major enables students to choose from three specialized tracks and to sample a rich variety of English electives.
The major requires a minimum of 54 credit hours, allocated as follows:
- Core courses (24 credits):
- Introduction to English Studies
- Writing for English Majors
- At least one course on Multicultural Literatures in English
- Introduction to Shakespeare
- Four survey courses (two in English Literature, two in American Literature)
- Courses in the student’s chosen track (18 credits, including a capstone course):
- Literature and Cultural Studies
- Creative Writing (Poetry or Fiction)
- Rhetoric and Professional Writing
- English electives (12 credits)
Students who began the major under the old requirements should consult with their advisers to plan their remaining coursework.
The certificates in creative writing, professional writing, journalism, and American Ethnic Studies continue to be offered, but primarily for nonmajors. An English minor is also available for nonmajors.
